The Last 20 Days
August 17

Hours worked: 5

But paid for 5.5. I trained someone today, woo.

Random Things that Happened:

It was ridiculously slow, especially for two people. So I got to meet the new recruit. She had a shift yesterday to learn the basics of the job, and then tonight she learned how to close with me.

She seems pretty nice. And is apparently a big Twilight fan, or was back when it was new. Yet she doesn’t like Harry Potter. Pfft.

Shitty Parts:

None really. It was just annoying that when we wanted to sweep and mop, there were customers overstaying there welcome so we couldn’t. But they left with plenty of time to finish.

I’m not used to teaching someone how to close when they barely know about the store, but whatever. I’ll do the best I can.

Last Notes:

Because of how slow it was, I gave the recruit a good idea on how to close and tomorrow when she joins in my shift, is supposed to do the planning of when to do things and I listen to her and correct minor stuff. Shall be exciting.

August 16

Hours worked: 4.5

And I got paid for 5 hours.

Random Things That Happened:

It wasn’t overly busy so I actually ended up reading for awhile.

I got a tip. :) $1.44 I also got my pay check for lots of moneys. Well, I got two because the first two stores are under one technical business and the third is under its own. So I had like 81.5 hours at the third store and 6.5 at the other. I get paid biweekly. That is a shit ton of hours with no overtime.

I told my boss that I was moving on Tuesday. Such a lie. I’m moving a week from Tuesday. I just really need to start packing and maybe seeing my friends a few times before not seeing them until the end of October.

Shitty Parts:

I ran out of stuff because our order doesn’t come in until Wednesday (today) so that was really annoying to deal with.

Also, I really don’t understand why I have to close this store at 11 when I have barely ANY customers after 9. I really doubt that my boss even makes enough money to pay the employees with how much he makes at night.

Last Note:

I really don’t prefer working at this store. I’m so used to the backwards store of busy hell and the weird computer set up.

Looks like I start training for the rest of my shifts; my replacement coworker got his friend hired here so I’m training her starting on Aug 17. That’ll be fun. It’ll be my, what, third time? Teaching someone how to close this year? Yea, pretty much. Apparently my boss wanted either me or one other person to do it so that there was no language barrier. Really he’s just too lazy and doesn’t teach people to close because he doesn’t work at night.

Whatever. Working again tonight, big surprise. xD

August 14 and 15

August 14

Hours worked: 6

Opened the store again. Poor coworker had to guess how much bread to do because my boss is an ass and wasn’t available to call. Lots of bread.

Random things that happened:

I opened the store. I was pretty tired because I’m not a morning person. I had a lot to finish.

Ended up teaching how to make bread, because it was slow enough for me to have time to do so. Was fun, it’s really not rocket science. Well, at least this store is pretty idiot proof. Press the proofer on (makes the bread rise). Wait until it beeps annoyingly to say it’s heated. Put bread in. Push timer. After 40 minutes, turn oven on, preheat it. Put bread in oven and put the timer on. POOF! MAGIC! BREAD! XD It’s more complicated at the old store because it’s not automatic and you have to shove the door or it won’t stay closed, and it’s tempermental… Yea.

Shitty Parts:

None, really. Other than the fact that it was a morning shift.

Last Notes:

That was my second last shift at that store for the summer. I shall miss my regulars, but will probably see them all on Friday which is my next shift there.

——-

August 15 (today!)

Hours worked: 3.5

But I’m paid for 4. At this store we get the extra half hour pay at the end of the night to make sure we have enough time to finish everything. Woo.

Random Things that Happened:

We got a new sub today. Green chili steak and bacon. It looks absolutely disgusting. Well. The green sauce does. It looks like nasty green goo with chunks of green in it and chili peppers. Ugh. I’m supposed to be all “Hey, wanna try our new sub? :D” and really I’m like “ew. That looks nasty. Don’t try it. Or; want it without the sauce?” Aha.

Shitty Parts:

People kept coming at the last minute so I didn’t get to mop the floors until like, 5 minutes before I closed. x_x I hate rushing around. Blehh.

Last Notes:

I still dislike working at this store, but I know it like the back of my hand. It’s like my personal baby. I can open and close it in my sleep. To be honest I used to wake up in the middle of the night CONVINCED that I  had to re-arrange the trays. I would get out of bed, stand beside it and reach as if pulling the doors to the bread cupboard open and grabbing trays. Then I’d go “NO. Stupid. It’s sleep time.” Lay back down, then jump back up and go “BUT I HAVE TO DO IT” xD

August 12 and 13

Wow I’m bad at doing this every day.

Friday August 12

Hours worked: 7

I worked from 11-6, mainly to answer questions in the last hour as to how to close. The person who took over at 5 is my replacement, and closed by himself for the first time.

Random Things that Happened:

My boss came in and explained cash things to my coworker because he didn’t understand my way, and understood my bosses way slightly better. Ah well, he figured it out.

It was weird to leave by 6 pm. Just saying.

Shitty Parts:

Someone quit with no notice. Again. I no longer have Monday and Tuesday off. ): Now I’m working at our first store, even though I’m not supposed to work there this summer because of when it closes… :/

Last Notes:

Wasn’t a horrible shift, I was kept busy during the lunch time and leading to dinner time. I then got to spend time with a friend afterward so that was nice.

——

August 13

Hours Worked: 7 (and a bit)

Because my manager was away, I opened the store at 8am. Fuck me. I’m not a morning person at all.

Random Things that Happened:

Told a regular customer or two where my manager was.

I opened the store after my coworker closed for the first time by himself here. He made a few mistakes (which is normal). He didn’t know how to double pan bread, so he put them ontop of each other in the fridge and they stuck together and it was a pain in the ass to get apart. xD

Shitty Parts:

It was so busy. I didn’t get a chance to finish everything and because I was getting picked up, I had to leave before everything was completely finished. I stayed an extra 20 minutes though.

Last Notes:

Waking up early sucks.

—-

I’ll do yesterday and today tonight.

August 10 and 11

I was tired.

August 10:

Hours worked: 5.5

Store I don’t like, I ended up reading for a lot of the time.

—-

August 11:

Hours worked: 5.5

Regular store. I trained my replacement how to close the store.

Random Quotes/Things that Happened:

To be honest I had maybe 10 customers the whole night haha.

One of my regulars ended up asking me when I was working this week, to make sure I’d be there.

My coworker is very amused by small things. Like the water hose in the sink. And the drains which are on the outside, so you don’t have to stick your arm in the dirty water.

Shitty Parts:

Well since there were no customers, I guess nothing shitty happened. Someone made a huge mess after everything was mopped, so I guess that kinda sucked…

Last Notes:

No more closing shifts this week; tomorrow is a mid-day shift and then I open both days of the weekend to give my manager some time off.

My coworker/replacement is closing for the first time by himself tomorrow and I get to work the next morning and find out what he forgot. Joy.

August 9

Late.

Hours worked: 9.5

Regular store. Long-ass shift. At least it looks like it’s the last long one!

Random Quotes/Things that Amused me:

The rain. Holy crap the rain just poured down and it rained whales. Needless to say it was only busy because people didn’t want to go back to their cars yet so they came to me.

When I got into work, I could barely think above the loudness of the music. The guy who closed for me on my day off cranked it up. I am too short to reach the musical dial, even on our step stool. I am a determined person. My manager watched and laughed as I took a tall chair stool from the front and climbed onto it to reach the dial.

An ambulance, EMTs and a firetruck pulled into the parking lot in the middle of the afternoon. (it’s not amusing, I’m just putting this in) I hope that whoever needed help is alright. It was just odd seeing them in the rain just pulling up by a car.

My boss confirmed my last day. Then he proceeded to ask, “Well, can I call you in just for one or two shifts after that?” Haha, no. He wants the grand opening of the store to be when I’m here. I told him that I was moving back to school that week so I wouldn’t be able to help. No way I’m giving up my freedom after the past few weeks of hell.

Shitty Things that Happened:

I’m going to call this customer “Pissy Mayo guy”. He came in, ordered his order whatever. He was one of THOSE people who are very precise in what they want. “More of that” and such. Then he asked for “a little bit of mayo”. Normally I have fairly decent control over the sauces, but you know, it happens. I did one line but it was thick instead of thin and he freaked out. “OMG You call that a LITTLE? Take like, HALF of that off, geeze. What do you think is a LOT then?” and he went on and on. -_- I hate people like that. Like yes, I put on too much. You can deal with it a bit better.

Last Notes:

I’m late putting this up. Tonight might be late as well since I am scheduled until 11:30 at the non-fun teenager infested first location. Bleh.

August 8

My first day off in a week and a half.

Since I will have 3 days off (including today) before I leave, I will put one topic for each. Today I think will be random tips.

Random Tips for Subway/food customers:

-Don’t piss off the employee. They can do things to your food while you aren’t looking.

-Honestly, staring at the person making your food while they are finishing cutting it in half and moving it onto the wrapping paper is ridiculous. Do you expect them to fuck it up somehow? Stop watching and go to the damn cash register.

-Pointing/tapping on the glass to what you want on your food does the person making the food no good. You could be pointing to at least 3 different things for all we know. Use your words.

-If you happen to be in a large line-up of people, it would be nice if you knew what you wanted to order BEFORE you got into line, or at least decided before it was your turn to order.

-Not everyone knows how much each individual thing is with tax, especially not if you ask for multiple things and ask how much the total cost will be. Really. Would you walk into Wal-Mart and pick up five different items and say to someone on the floor, “Quick. How much is all of this, tax included?” No, it doesn’t work like that.

-If the person making your food burns themselves making your food, it would be nice if you gave them a moment to run their burned body part (usually hands) under cold water before returning to the food. Just saying. It’d be nice.

-Remember that it is your own fault if you say you want something, and then change your mind. Don’t blame the employee if you say you want one thing, then decide on another after the fact.

August 7

Hours worked: 5.5

Today my manager and I switched shifts for the first time. I opened and she is closing. I was really nervous to open because I’ve only done it once or twice this summer and I haven’t done it at all with this store. Of course I’ve done it many times in previous summers, but just not this summer.

Random Quotes/Things that Happened:

Regular customer: “Wow, do you have a bed back there or something?”

I got all the way to the cash with two customers that were together, and they were like “Oh yea. Can we have two more of those?” Gr.

Another regular customer when both my manager and I were there: “Oh, so it’s almost time for you to leave now!” (talking to my manager) and then she said “Nope, I started at 12:30, she (me) gets to go home soon.” Customer: “Aw, but what about your family? You’re supposed to spend time with them!” Gee thanks. Am I not allowed to spend time with mine? :/

Shitty Parts of Today:

I burned the piss out of my hand with steam from opening a lid off of something after having it in the microwave for 8 minutes.

Waking up early sucks. But I got to go home early so I guess it goes both ways.

Last Notes:

Tomorrow is my first day off in a week and a half. Exciting things shall happen. :)

August 6

Hours worked: 7.5

So apparently the store mine is in decided today they were going to start closing early on Saturdays. So I got to close at 7:30 instead of 8:30, yay!

Random Quotes/Things that Happened:

I was told at the end of a major line up rush by myself that I should get a raise because I was such a good worker and was always alone. Haha, too bad I don’t even get overtime, let alone more than minimum wage.

Shitty Parts of Today:

Busy parts generally suck the most. I get annoyed when people don’t let me finish my work and just keep coming one by one instead of all together.

Because of being busy, my bread sat out too long and was way too big, but I still baked it anyway because I had to. Now we have large bread.

I didn’t finish everything and I have to open the store tomorrow morning and finish.

Last notes:

13 days left of working. I got my schedule and I have 2 days off in it, so that’s a total of 3 days off before I leave. So really it’s like 10 more days of work left. That’s great news to me!

My replacement is almost trained too. He comes in on Thursday with me to learn how to close the store, then goes solo the night after. Which I get to open the next day to see how he did. That part is less fun. No one has a good first closing alone. No one.

August 5

Hours Worked: 10.5

11am-9:30pm. Good God these shifts are getting long. My mom woke me up 10 minutes before we had to leave and I almost fell asleep on the car ride to work.

Random Quotes/Things that Happened:

I walked in as a zombie, worse than usual, but I lasted until about 12:30 until I got some Coke.

My boss came in to put up the schedule for next week, and to offer me a job for next summer. Usually it has been implied, but he said it outright this year. Wow.

Shitty Parts of Today:

People. Sometimes I wish I could hop over the counter and just strangle them. These thoughts mainly come when I’m very sleep deprived and cranky and overworked; much like I have been lately. I have a lot of patience, and rude people got on my nerves far too much.

One of my garbage bags started to leak from the bottom as I was bringing it through the store. I had to carry it mostly upside-down the rest of the way. It was not fun.

Last notes:

I really hate terms of endearment. Customers calling me “dear” aggravates the crap out of me. Or ‘ma’am’. Gr.

Tomorrow is eight and a half hours. Normal hours are coming so close… Just starting on Wednesday.
